TASK: Structured Self-Portrait
Learn how to accurately measure, mark out and render the various parts of your face to create a realistic portrait drawing. Master techniques such as shading, blending and matching the tonal values and textures in your portrait.
​
DEVICE:
Realism has been central to the role of the artist for thousands of years. Before the camera the artist was the sole creator of realistic imagery that reproduced reality.
​
MATERIALS:
Portrait photo, HB & 4B pencils, ruler, rubber, tortillon.

Squashed Portrait

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Developing our mastery of skills and understanding of identity through the exploration of portraiture techniques.

TASK: Squashed Portrait
Photocopy yourself and copy it onto black paper. Use white pencils to draw over the ghost image on the black paper adding highlights and light areas in a detailed way.
​
DEVICE:
Traditionally artists start with a white background but many artists find that starting with a mid-tone or dark background makes darker images easier to produce (and cheaper!).
​
MATERIALS:
Printer/scanner, white crayons, white paint.

Fragmented Portrait

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Developing our mastery of skills and understanding of identity through the exploration of portraiture techniques.

TASK: Fragmented Portrait
Experiment with ways of manipulating photographs to create portraits with interesting and unusual effects. Cut, twist and re-arrange photographs to make creative collage art.
​
DEVICE:
Sometimes even the simplest manipulating can alter an image in very creative ways, changing its appearance, composition and sometimes even its meaning.
​
MATERIALS:
Photos, scissors, glue stick, ruler, craft knife.

Experimental Portrait

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Developing our mastery of skills and understanding of identity through the exploration of portraiture techniques.

TASK: Experimental Portrait
Use you imagination and creativity to manipulate and create a portrait using interesting and exciting techniques. You could find an inspirational artist to emulate or you could use your experimental powers to create something original.

DEVICE:
There are an endless number of ways you can make a creative portrait...the limits are your imagination!

MATERIALS:
Portrait photos, imagination, various art materials.

3D Bust

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Developing our mastery of skills and understanding of identity through the exploration of portraiture techniques.
​
TASK: 3D Bust Sculpture
Manipulate a ball of clay into a clay head with character. First shape the head and then add the forms of the face, ears, hair and jawline. Use clay tools to add smaller details and textures.
​
DEVICE:
Raw materials have been manipulated to create sculptures of humans for more than 25,000 years. Statues and sculptures are still made today to honour and commemorate people.
​
MATERIALS:
Clay, clay tools, hessian mat, water pot, reference photos.
